Emergency Lighting
Design, installation, and statutory testing of emergency lighting systems to ensure safe evacuation and legal compliance.
Lighting the Way to Safety
In the event of a mains power failure, particularly during a fire or emergency, your premises will plunge into darkness. Emergency lighting is a critical life-safety system designed to illuminate escape routes, exit doors, and fire equipment, allowing occupants to evacuate safely.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it is a legal requirement for commercial premises, care homes, HMOs, and public buildings to have adequate emergency lighting installed and maintained to BS 5266-1 standards.
Grays Electrical provides full-service emergency lighting solutions, from initial design and complete installations to scheduled statutory testing and maintenance of existing systems.
Statutory Testing Requirements
Installing the system is only the first step. Emergency lighting relies on internal batteries that degrade over time. The law requires a strict testing regime to ensure the lights will actually work for the required duration (usually 3 hours) during an emergency.
- •Monthly test: A brief functional test to check the luminaire operates when power is simulated to fail.
- •Annual test: A full rated duration test (e.g., 3 hours) to ensure the batteries hold sufficient charge.
We offer maintenance contracts to handle your annual testing, providing you with the necessary certification for your fire safety logbook.
